Mangatopia: Essays on Manga and Anime in the Modern World. Edited by Timothy Perper and Martha Cornog.
Considering the description on the Amazon.com page, I don’t have the feeling that this is a collection of revolutionary essays about anime and manga, but it might provide some insights in the latest research on such topic as:
- representations of sex and sexuality in anime and manga;
- the media theories on the relationships between anime, manga and cinema in general;
- anime-manga and history, especially representations of WWII;
- Anime and manga fans activities, especially fanfic and cosplay.
Overall, these topics have been quite common among anime-manga scholars for the last 10 years, so the merit of this new publication might reside in the potentially novel ways they are treated or in the new elements brought to them. If not, then, I guess, the previous collections of essays and articles already released are more than enough for anyone who’s just starting to study this field from an academic standpoint.
