Ph.D.

Background

Nowaday, cultural globalization is often portrayed in public discourses as a grim unquestionable reality imposed on the whole world by large US entertainment multinationals. Concomitant with this evolution of these industrial sectors, cultural homogeneization is then considered like an inevitability, which one can only regret but not really stop. However, this perception is being increasingly contradicted by researches (see for example Koichi Iwabuchi) that tend to show an eastward tilting of the global entertainment industry balance towards Asia, and particularly Japan and Korea. It is on the basis of this intuition that I have started working on a Ph.D. project dealing with the international circulation of Japanese commercial audiovisual contents and the role played by people’s appropriation of the new digital media platforms in their reception of these products. Bibliography

In this page, I’ll propose a peak into my reading with some reviews of the books or articles I’m using for this project, whether to collect background information on Japanese entertainment industry, to build my theoretical basis or the methodology of my fieldwork. Please, don’t hesitate to let me know if you have read them and what you thought of them. As my dissertation will be in French, there are chances that these notes will also be in French, as I might not always have the time to translate them. [Check out my annoted bibliography here]
