Aca-Blog

Bursting the academic bubble:

For newcomers like me in the world of academic research, it is essential to connect with other young and older researchers from around the globe. This website is therefore addressed to all companions in academic suffering, hem, hem, I mean, fellow researchers met in various Internet forums and colleagues from the Geneva University Ph.D. school in Media and Communication Studies. It is also a way for me get out of the “ivory tower” and hopefully encounter those outside it who might also be interested in this kind of research and willing to share with me the perspectives they have gained from their own fields of activities.

Publish or perish?

Such issue could seem a bit exagerated at my stage, as I’m yet still a Ph.D. candidate! But I do realize how important it can be for my future academic career to start writing articles, even if not yet in prestigious publications. It also helps me sharpen both my reflection and my pen as well as my overall experience as a begining researcher.

In this blog, I hope to be able to share with you some of my works, present and past. I especially intend to keep people participating in my projects updated on my fieldworks progresses. I welcome, of course, any comments, critics and suggestions to improve them and avoid repeating the same mistake in future instances.

What have I got there?

In general, it is a place where I can store my thoughts in progress and put some orders into them before I become completely saturated. Here you can also get updated on my dissertation and other researches. Of course, I also publish some of my papers, articles and presentations, as well as book or article reviews, thus giving you a peak into my other research projects and my overall reading. Finally, I use this blog to relay call for papers, scholarships announcements, coming-up events and publications, etc. I guess, most of it is textual, although I try to use graphical and audiovisual material as well. But I think I have a limited amount of space here, so I prefer to save it as much as possible. I might get more multimedia when I decide to host this blog on the server of my Internet provider, but for the moment, it doesn’t meet the technical requirements for a WordPress.org blog.

Quid dicis?

After a long and difficult pondering, I have decided to write this website in English, although some of the texts published here might be in French. Indeed, I wanted to make the content of these pages available to as many people as possible in my academic network, which means that I can’t limit myself to French. On the other hand, I really don’t have the time to maintain a website in several languages. English won, as you can guess! It is maybe unfortunate for the francophiles out there, but then, French had its time until the end of the 19th century. Next century might be that of Chinese, so keep your fingers crossed!
